If lemon juice is too drying, the best alternative would be to strong chamomile tea which has conditioning properties. Heated but do not boil liquids, boiling liquid will cause immediate dye release (once the dye starts to release you only have so much time to apply the henna). Terps aka EO's facilitate quicker dye release over time and don't affect consistency. Does Henna Paste have to be packed and 'caked' on... I've been thinking about this since my last two applications, and then someone answered my question through comment... so no it doesn't have to be caked on, but you do not want it hair dye thin either but just enough to cover your hair and you will still received great results (once you put on your plastic cap, your body heat will help distribute the henna dye.) Last is a vinegar rinse. About 1 tbs of red wine vinegar in two cups of water.
